Martha Stewart: Just Desserts, the Unauthorized Biography
If you have any curiosity or interest in Martha Stewart, don't deny yourself the pleasure of reading this book any longer. I wanted to read this book for years before finally giving in to my baser instincts, so I speak from experience. This page-turner of a book is filled with riveting quotes from family members, school friends and Martha's ex-husband that help explain exactly how Martha got to be where she is today.Crackpot: The Obsessions of John Waters
I love, love, love this utterly demented series of essays by filmmaker John Waters. Whether he's writing about why he loves Los Angeles, or describing his experiences teaching film in a high-security prison, Waters always manages to deliver an unexpected and blank. And don't you really want to know how Waters decorates for Christmas?Estee: A Success Story
This autobiography is so preposterous it almost made my head explode--but in a good way. In an essentially feminine, lightly floral kind of way. This is the female version of the Horatio Alger or "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" story, showing how a young girl with a dream and a jar of really good homebrew cold cream can make it to the top in this world.Hollywood Babylon
How many times have I lounged in my apartment during a summer heatwave, when it's far too hot to think or read, idly thumbing through Hollywood Babylon's incriminating photo evidence of celebrities run amuck? This is the only book in my library that is actually held together with a rubber band because it has physically fallen apart through overuse.Downsize This! Random Threats from an Unarmed American
Before Stupid White Men, Moore's current bestseller, there was Downsize This! Although Stupid White Men has its funny moments, it's more of an expose than a collection of humorous essays. Downsize This! is just plain funny, and remarkably, still relevant. Since it's a few years old, if you're unemployed now and can't afford a book, you can probably find it in the library.D.V.
This autobiography is either a complex enactment of the contradications inherent in female identity or a possibly fraudulent recollection of a life spent mostly among the rich, beautiful, and titled. Either way, it's one of the most ridiculously entertaining books I've ever read. Among its many attractive features are numerous anecdotes concerning the Duchess of Windsor.Myra Breckinridge
This book should be required reading for anyone who considers him or herself a Classic movie buff. Unfortunately, the movie version of this novel was a notable disaster and has perhaps steered people away from reading this wonderful book. Nice bit of trivia: according to Palimpsest, Gore Vidal's memoirs, Myra's distinctive manner of speech is based on that of Anais Nin.- Star Trek: Dark Passions Book One, Book Two If you've been waiting for the salacious lesbian title, this is it. Actually, these are them, because Dark Passions is a two-part series. You can read a post I did on these books for more details.
The Hippopotamus
There are few things that can rival English comedy when it comes to creating a mood of light frivolity. If you're a fan of Stephen Fry's movie and TV roles, such as the butler Jeeves in the recurring Jeeves and Woosterseries, consider reading one of his books. This one's my favorite.
